DID YOU KNOW THAT ARKANSAS IS #1 IN SENIOR HUNGER?
I’m sure you most likely didn’t realize that Arkansas was named #1 in Senior Hunger. The fact that our seniors aged 60 and older in the wealthiest nation on Earth may be going hungry is shocking! About 1/3 of all Arkansans aged 60 and older – more than 160,000 people – are living with food insecurity. They are faced with choosing between food and medicine, food and housing, food and utility bills. Food insecurity is fundamentally an issue of a lack of access to sufficient amounts of nutritious foods is caused by financial hardship, lack of transportation, mobility issues, and living in areas with few food stores.
Alzheimer’s Arkansas wants to do our part in helping these seniors. Our plan is to collect 1 or more can good item from each participant that attends one of our events, like the walks. We have partnered with the Arkansas Food Bank and whatever we collect in that county goes to seniors in that county.
In Little Rock the canned goods go to Primrose Food Pantry at the Primrose United Methodist Church on Dixon Road. We are in the process of finding food pantries in the counties where we have events scheduled.
If you have not been on a tour of the Arkansas Food Bank, finding the time to take a tour is an experience worth taking. Contact Elaine Braddock at the Arkansas Food Bank at 501-569-4302 or email her at email@example.com.
